One of the most frequent questions I'm asked is "how do you do your hair?" and considering I've had several styles over the seasons it's hard remembering/describing the process of just one. I've concluded that the only sufficient way to really give you the 411 on ma "do's" is by chronicling them here, allowing you to get in on these secrets (there aren't any secrets but some of my readers think otherwise) Regardless, I'll be happy to point you in the right direction.
The first image is one hell of a blast from the past. I call this hair style "the bieber before bieber fever" Have we all fallen down and smacked our little heads on the pavement? I recall this hairstyle being quite the booming trend amongst the "Scene" crowd. Hawthorne heights anyone? If we're going to really get to the root of true inspiration then I'll have to cater my applaud to the 70's folk or even the beatles.
here's the how-to:
1)grow your hair down to your ears (medium length)
2)go to the salon and ask the hairdresser to shape the cut around the bangs, everything will flow forward in your face. (show them this picture if you have to)
3)ask for a lot of layers! This can be accomplished by using a razor
4)once home, (assuming you have a blow dryer and straightener) flatiron all the layers to flow with the bangs and the bangs themselves.
5)for products try some wax on the tips to achieve an edgier look and of course, hairspray. my choice is Tresemme.
Next up we've got ~*GoTh PrInCe*~ My decision to go "two shades above black" really REALLY didn't matter considering it came out darker than midnight. I personally favor people who have darker skin tones, tan or ethnic descent to sport black hair. Unfortunately, I am not one of those people, sad face. My olive complexion didn't really accentuate the hair in a good way although my blue eyes did pop. It's highly recommended that you sit down and weigh out the alternatives before jumping into a drastic change.
how-to:
1) you must have medium length hair for starters
2)go to the salon and ask to look at the color books, and to achieve the color I have above, you'll want something close to C-2
3)once dyed asked her to add layers with the razor
4)repeat steps 4 and 5 above from previous
I remember the sudden impulse that eventually led me to cutting all my hair off like it was yesterday. It resulted in this cut which is what I have coined the "preppy pompadour" As you can see the black still lingered upon my ends but I didn't mind, I just swept that shit back. I've always thought I had somewhat of large forehead so this was a big step for me people! Exposing it like a big drive in movie theatre screen, GET YA POPCORN.
how-to:
1)you'll need to start with short to medium hair length
2)go to the salon and ask your hairdresser for the "gentleman's cut" which essentially is longer on top, and short on the sides.
3)go home, blow dry it backwards with a comb and even straighten it if you have wavy hair like me.
4)apply pomade, thick gel or putty (labels I like are TIGI bed-head or bumble and bumble)
My undying affinity for 90s culture is quite apparent here. Tapping into a Leonardo Dicaprio (circa 1995) inspiration, I accomplished this hair style I call "Rose, never let go!". The pompadour cut eventually starting growing out, leading me to parting it down the middle and allowing the bangs to sway ever so romantically aside my downturned eyes. Also reference films/shows such as boy meets world, mrs. doubtfire, and Full house for further middlepart boyspiration cuts.
how-to:
1)you must have medium length hair
2)dampen your hair and comb backwards allowing it to create columns.
3)once you've chosen which column placement you like, part it like the red sea!
4)bring your bangs forward on each side of your face and let them dry like that for an effortless hang
5)add some moose or light gel for a slightly messy-grunge effect
And last but not least, my personal favorite, the "galla cut". A cross between a male ombre and surfer chic, I believe this one fits my features, complexion and style just right. You want your hair to compliment what you wear as well as your face.
how-to:
1)you must have medium length hair
2)go to the salon and ask your hairdresser to add highlights (frosted tips), and a GOLD toner
3)ask her to add a ton of layers via razor.
4)if she cuts, make sure to let her know you want it to FLOW FORWARD towards the face, shaping the face
5)repeat steps 4 and 5 above (blow dry and flat iron)
there you have it. all the secrets of the Galla hairhood have been exposed. comment below with any further questions!
